THE GUY MITCHELL APPRECIATION SOCIETY : LES PECKHAM and FRIENDS : GREAT BRITAIN
We're updating the link to this club, in Great Britain, which celebrates the music of American Guy Mitchell, who was one of my early favorites growing up. Early in our blogging, we contacted the club because there's a bit about Guy Mitchell in the book we've been writing! They run an official site for the Guy Mitchell estate as well. WOW ! WHAT A FUN SITE ! TED STAUNTON's LABELS COLLECTION!
Just to take a pause here, you all just have to link to this fantastic site. A fellow named TED STAUNTON's got a RECORD LABEL COLLECTION (These are 78 RPM) that really illustrates the originality and beauty of functional art! (Now we know that Ted collected the records beneath these labels and we wonder what a record collection he has!)
Here's a little technology talk. These days there are still people who play music on hi-fi's, on 8 track cassettes, on reel to reel tape... Maybe nobody you know but we know them!
These people are using the equipment that plays the recordings the way they bought them or recorded them live because that sound quality is vintage - maybe the artists haven't given over to converting the recordings. These vintage music enthusiasts love the crackle and the pops - the vintage sound of the old recordings. They love being able to change the bass or the treble. They can remember being off stage when a band performed and like the screaming in the background.
Christine and I are often trying to figure out which Youtube or other video we want to post because we love original performances and think our readers should see what the artists looked like when they sang those songs - history! (OK, no more cracks about how I'm History!)
People were buying 78 RPM versions of records that were also released on 45 RPM's for some time. I bought my first GUY MITCHELL record on 78 RPM in the mid 1950's and I believe that my first United Artists release was also put on a 78 RPM version.

To put the party years in context of what was happening in the music business about the time that I arrived in LA to work at American Music and resumed my friendship with Elvis, here is a a YouTube video...
Petula Clark from London England and my old favorite, Guy Mitchell, appeared in late February 1960 on the Guy Mitchell Show. They sang a duet of "The Alphabet Song." Guy continues to have significant fans in the UK, Australia, and you can follow the links posted to the left of this blog to his site!

(28) GUY MITCHELL - WISE MAN OR FOOL; THE FIRST RECORD I EVER BOUGHT
As the youngest son I helped my mom with her chores in and around our house on the mountainside in Murphy, North Carolina and continued to do so when we moved to Cottage Grove, Oregon as I was a young teenager.
Mom and I liked to sing songs along with the radio as we worked. We never did get a television.
When I was about fifteen I bought the first record I ever bought, as a gift for my mother. It was a record by Guy Mitchell, called "Wise Man or Fool?" My mom died when I was about 16 and I carried that record with me throughout my career as a kind of talisman, even when it got broken into a thousand pieces and all I had was the label.
A couple years into my career with United Artists, when I was home to New York City for a respite, I walked into the Turf Restaurant and there was Guy Mitchell in the flesh! He patted the seat next to him, bought me coffee, and we talked about singing and the music business. He was fascinated that I had met Elvis Presley and expressed admiration for him. Guy was a gentleman, and when I told him his was the first record I ever bought and that I carried that label around with me as a talisman, he said, "I have a lot of fans but none quite like you!"

Folks, there is a group over in England that's called the Guy Mitchell Appreciation Society and they are doing a fine job of appreciating Guy! A nice guy named Jim Smith was our original contact with the Society, and Les Peckham is over there now, taking care of things since Jim passed away.
