Thanks to one of our YouTube friends we decided to post this music video, singer-songwriter, Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys covering a Christmas classic. (Brian recorded Ersel Hickey's Blue Birds Over the Mountains.)
Just heard that the Beach Boys are regrouping to do a 50th Anniversary Tour! So we're linking to a news article that gives the details! Brian Wilson is well enough to tour and we're glad to hear it!

(371) CAPITOL RECORDS : A GREAT BIG RECORD LABEL
Throughout this blog we've posted on many of the smaller or regional record labels.
These labels were extrememly important to my generation of rockabilly and early rock and roll artists, as was the personality DJ who still was able to pick his or her favorites and give them a spin on the radio, often making stars out of artists. Many of these smaller labels had near no budget for promotion but the great big labels, such as Capitol Records did and so being signed by them usually meant that you'd have a publicity machine behind your efforts.

By 1964 Capitol had The Beatles of Great Britain and The Beach Boys of Los Angeles, California. They also had Glen Campbell, who was starting to move forward in his entertainment career after years of performing in small venues. (But let's hold a bit on the Glen Campbell story, which has been in the media lately.)
We're linking to the present day Capitol Records site where we noticed that BRIAN WILSON of the Beach Boys and RINGO STAR of the Beatles are still signed artists with this label!

(250) I MEET BRIAN WILSON
One day in the studio I met Brian Wilson, of the Beach Boys, who showed me some of the lyrics he was writing, wanting my opinion. I was honored when anyone asked my opinion. I thought Brian was insecure about his talent. And today I know that Brian has struggled for years to overcome so much, I can admire him as much for his ability to persist as I can his musical genius.
At the time what we had around the studio was fun working. His wife Marilyn, used to drive by me as she dropped Brian off or picked him up from the studio, and she'd give me the finger - along with a big smile and a laugh!

(249) SURF MUSIC and ME
Maybe songs from the late 1950's like Buddy Knox's "Hula Love" and Pat Boone's "Love Letters in the Sand," and the Hawaii craze that started when Hawaii became a state of the United States, started it...
Although I was not so much into it myself at the time, having been raised in the Smokey Mountains far from any ocean and more into my roots in Country, the summer of 1962 was the summer that California surf music washed across the United States like an tidal wave from west to east!
